2012 has been a momentous year of celebrations and achievements for the country, and a memorable year also for Paul as he celebrates his own personal anniversary. It is 40 years since he began his studies at Art College in Sussex, so a fitting time now to reflect on that important milestone in his life. There was never any doubt about Paul's career path. As a small boy he would walk the South Downs with his father, Bill, listening to birdsong and being encouraged to look at the world with his own eyes and with attention to detail. He learnt to observe Nature in all its forms, relishing every sight and sound so that he could then portray these senses onto paper with such extraordinary accuracy that one can almost taste the scented air and feel the prickle of the teazle heads. Paul lives and breathes the countryside and coast that he loves and knows so well, constantly finding inspiration in walking the lanes and shores throughout the seasons. His ability to depict light in his paintings is exquisite and mesmerising, and brings an elusive and unique quality to his work. And so Paul's new exhibition for 2012 pays homage to his College tutors (Robert Taverner, Trevor Kemp and Alison Smith) who recognised a rare talent, encouraged him to believe in his passion and to strive hard to fulfill his ambitions and follow his dreams. |
